Stray Intake for City of Fond du Lac Residents under the 2023 Contract

As we transition our services requested by the City of Fond du Lac for 2023, we want to clarify processes and procedures that follow within the services the City has requested for the FdL Humane Society.

Strays – The FdL Humane Society has been contracted by the city to house stray dogs and cats from within the Fond du Lac City limits but has not been contracted to transport animals for the City of Fond du Lac.

If a stray is found within the Fond du Lac city limits between the hours of noon and 5:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, call 920-922-8873 to arrange to drop off the animal. Outside those hours call the non-emergency FDL police number at 920-906-5555.

Handling of Feral Cats for City of Fond du Lac Residents

Feral cats are unsocialized outdoor cats who have either never had any physical contact with humans or human contact has diminished over enough time that the animal is no longer accustomed to humans.

Feral cats are not included in the contract with the City of Fond du Lac, therefore the FdL Humane Society cannot accept feral cats from within the Fond du Lac city limits. 

FdL Humane Society Ability to Accept Bite Quarantines

Wisconsin has quarantine requirements for dogs or cats that have bitten a person.  Wisconsin Statute 95.21 requires that any dog or cat which bites a person be quarantined for 10 days so that it can be observed for signs of rabies. 

If the dog or cat has NOT been vaccinated for rabies, the 10-day quarantine MUST be completed in an isolation facility. 

Police officers responding when a dog or cat has bitten someone will advise the pet owner of their requirements to quarantine.

The FdL Humane Society is set up to handle bite quarantines in a safe manner.  If your animal bites someone and is required to be quarantined in an isolation facility, please contact the FdL Humane Society at 920-922-8873.
